Gran Canaria is an island of the Canary Islands located in the Atlantic Ocean 210 km from the northwest coast of Africa. Gran Canaria is located southeast of Tenerife and west of Fuerteventura. The island is of volcanic origin,. Gran Canaria is the second most populated island of the Canary Islands after Tenerife Gran Canaria surface area is 1,560 km² and its maximum altitude is 1,949 meters Pico de Las Nieves. It has a round shape, with a diameter of approximately 50 km. Grand Canaria is know as the Small Continent because of its extremely varied landscapes with European, African and even American vegetation. The mountain range in the island's center, of a height of about 2000 meters, is cut by some bizarre canyons. Hardly anywhere else you can find such different landscapes and even climatical zones being geographically that close one to each other: mountain massives, desert land, tropical forests. Along the seaside there are wide beaches of sand, and while elsewhere people are shuddering of cold, here the tourists are lying in the sun and looking at those mountainpeaks being covered with snow. Gran Canaria has a lot to offer the tourist. The south is the most popular containing such delights as Puerto de Mogán (a picturesque village also known as Little Venice), Puerto Rico, Maspalomas and the famous Playa del Ingles. But with its spectacular views and landscapes, make sure you don't miss the rugged west coast and island's interior. Most visitors to Gran Canaria stay in one of the resorts along the South coast. The most important of these are San Agustin, Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas and Puerto Rico. Puerto de Mogan, now expanding, is a very chic resort where many people spend a day visiting. The capital city of Las Palmas is a high spot for tourists for a day shopping, architecture or lazing on its Las Canteras beach. From here you can get a bus to just about anywhere on the Island and therefore makes a good base. Gran Canaria's west coast is rugged and beautiful and only just touched by tourism as it is a National Park Area. The famous sand dunes of Maspalomas appear to have come straight out of Lawrence of Arabia. The natural sand of the Canary islands is black made from the volcanic rocks of the area. The sand dunes of Maspalomas are of golden sand that has blown over the sea from the Sahara desert Gran Canaria is truly one continent n one visit
